Matthew Perry has given Friends fans renewed hope that the long-awaited reunion special will be happening in the near future! As Entertainment Tonight shares, the actor revealed on social media on Thursday that even though things didn't go ahead as planned this year, 2021 will (fingers crossed!) see the Central Perk gang back together again!

Perry shares that Friends reunion plans are still a go

Perry took to Twitter to share that there's a tentative time period set aside next year for the Friends special to take place— and fans won't have to wait that much longer! "Friends reunion being rescheduled for the beginning of March," the actor tweeted. "Looks like we have a busy year coming up. And that's the way I like it!"

After rumours of a Friends reunion first circulated last year, the show's cast confirmed on social media in February that they would be reuniting for a special on HBO Max! While the coronavirus pandemic then caused production of the show to be delayed, they hoped to be able to film it during the summer. However, in August it was indefinitely postponed by the streaming service.

Friends creator hopes to have live audience for reunion

Perry and his Friends castmates have expressed their enthusiasm for the reunion in the past! Around the time it was first announced, Courteney Cox said that she's "so excited" about getting back together to reminisce about the show with Perry, Matt LeBlanc, Lisa Kudrow, David Schwimmer, and her real-life bestie, Jennifer Aniston.

And as Friends creator Marta Kaufman told Entertainment Tonight back in August, there's a key reason for the delay— they want fans to be able to see it taped! "We all want it to happen. We just have to wait until it is safe," she explained. "This is a show that is not scripted, but this is the way the show works -- we are going to need a live audience."

"Even if we socially distance that live audience, it really is a huge part of what Friends is... We cannot do it without them," Kaufman said. "Everyone is all in and we are just waiting for that time when it feels connected to bring in a live audience." Here's hoping that things will be aligned in 2021, so that the Friends reunion can finally happen!
