For the main roles of "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" the search was on for two big Hollywood stars who could act not only as action heroes but also as a believable married couple. After the project was given the green light, the casting team decided on Oscar winner Nicole Kidman and Brad Pitt as the leads.

But Kidman was unable to accept her role after all due to scheduling conflicts. The film project stalled, and Pitt also pulled out, hoping to work with Kidman on the project. The directors faced the challenge of finding their second choice for the romantic lead.
Gwen Stefani was about to take on the lead role. She revealed this on the ‘Ellen DeGeneres Show’.
"What movie role have you auditioned for that people would be surprised to know?" DeGeneres asked, to which Stefani replied "Mr. and Mrs. Smith: Angelina beat me!"
